Five Steps to a Clean Pool
Test - your pool water twice a week. If your water test indicates a low chlorine level, turn up your chlorinator. If your test indicates a high chlorine level, lower your chlorinator. Bather load, rainfall and sun exposure will affect the amount of chlorine your pool will require.
Tabs -fill your chlorinator with 6 7 Sun tabs on the same day each week. Do not exceed 7 tabs unless specifically directed to do so. Chlorine tabs dissolve like bars of soap, do not wait until there are none left in your chlorinator.
Shock -your pool at least once a week, twice per week when it is very hot, or the bather load is high. You should add 1/2 a pound of Aquaclear/Sun Lithium Hypochlorite shock, for every 10,000 gallons of pool water. You should only shock your pool in the evening, as the sun burns off the chlorine.
Algaecide -should be added once per week as a preventative measure. Use 5 ounces of Sun 30% Algaecide per ten thousand gallons of pool water. It is less expensive to add this product weekly, then it is to clear up a green pool when it occurs.
pH -needs to be checked twice a week and maintained within 7.2 to 7.6 on your test strip. If your Total Alkalinity is not above 100 PPM your pH will have a tendency to drift, so always adjust Total Alkalinity first then retest and adjust pH if needed.
We suggest that you have your pool water tested professionally twice per month and immediately after opening, and prior to closing your pool.
Preventative maintenance costs less than clearing up your pool after it has turned green!

1..2..3..Clear
Keeping a pool from getting green is easy! The recipe is as simple as 1..2..3..!
Tabs fill your chlorinator with 6 7 Sun tabs on the same day each week. Do not exceed 7 tabs unless specifically directed to do so. Chlorine tabs dissolve like bars of soap, do not wait until there are none left in your chlorinator. Add them on the same day of the week, 7 days apart. Test your pool water twice a week. If your water test indicates a low chlorine level, turn up your chlorinator. If your test indicates a high chlorine level, lower your chlorinator. Bather load, rainfall and sun exposure will affect the amount of chlorine your pool will require.
Shock your pool at least once a week (we recommend lithium based granular shock), twice per week when it is very hot, or the bather load is high. You should add 1/2 a pound of granular shock, premixed in water, for every 10,000 gallons of pool water. You should only shock your pool in the evening, as the sun burns off the chlorine.
Algaecide should be added once per week as a preventative measure. Sun 30% or 60% Non-foaming algaecide works best, follow the instructions on the bottle for the "maintenance" dose.
Its easier to avoid getting algae, then killing off an algae bloom during July and August's Hot Sunny Days!

Filter Operation
Skimmer Water Level: Ensure that the pool's water level is halfway up the skimmer faceplate. This is the normal operating level, (even with the third screw on the faceplate as you count from the bottom up).
Skimmer Basket/Throat: Keep the skimmer basket clean and make sure the skimmer throat is not obstructed. Adjust the skimmer flap, (located at the bottom of each skimmer) the one in the skimmer closest to the pump should be half-open, any others should be open all the way.
Pump Strainer: Open pump to ascertain basket is clean, intact and seated properly. Never operate your pump without water or the strainer basket in the pump. Before closing, fill the pump housing with water. Replace the housing cover, making sure the gasket is in position so no dirt or grit will prevent a tight seal.
Filter Pressure Gauge: When starting the pump, it may take a short time for the filter pressure to normalize due to the presence of air in the suction lines. By opening the air bleeder valve located on the top of your filter to expel the air more rapidly. When the air has been expelled, the pressure gauge reading should be 10-15 psi on most filters (15-20 psi on systems with heaters).
Diatomaceous Earth Filters: Do not operate your DE filter longer than one minute with adding DE. Add DE to the skimmer closest to the pump (with the skimmer flap wide open) once the water comes out of the returns in a steady stream. Add the DE slowly to the skimmer, or premix the DE in a bucket of water and then add it to the skimmer. Once done, readjust the skimmer flap, and bleed the air out of the filter (step #4).

Vacuuming
Turn pump off. Make sure that your skimmer and pump strainer baskets are clean.
Adjust skimmer flaps (located underneath each skimmer basket). Open the flap in the skimmer closest to the pump and filter all the way, and close the other skimmer(s) flap(s). You will vacuum though the skimmer closest to the pump and filter.
If you have a main drain, it should be closed to afford maximum suction through the skimmer. Turn your Jandy Valve to shut off the main drain.
Turn on your pump and check your skimmer for water movement to ensure strong suction.
Stretch out your vacuum hose along the side of your pool. Snap the vacuum head into the end of the vacuum pole. Slip one end of the vacuum hose onto the vacuum head. If you have a swivel cuff on your vacuum hose, make sure the swivel end goes onto the vacuum head.
Prime the hose. Place the vacuum head (with the hose and pole attached into the pool. Place the hose end (you have in your hand), against the return fitting and allow the water to "blowout" or displace the air in the vacuum hose. The vacuum head will rise and bubble. When it has settled to the bottom of the pool, cup your hand over the vacuum hose and carry it to the skimmer closest to the pump and filter.
Place the skim vacuum plate on the end of the hose. Bring the hose over the coping and place it directly on the skimmer basket. Youre vacuuming now!
Move the vacuum head slowly. If the vacuum head is moved too rapidly it will stir up sediment and your results will be less than satisfactory when the dirt has settled requiring a second vacuum.
When completed, disconnect, remove and drain hose then store. Return skimmer flaps and valves to their normal operating positions. Check filter pressure gauge to see if the filter needs to be backwashed.
Helpful Hints
Do not lift the vacuum head out of the water or you will lose your prime.
Disregard your filter pressure reading it usually drops while vacuuming.
Disregard air in your pump basket.
Check skimmer basket periodically if the pool has a lot of leaves or other debris in it.
Backwash the filter if the pool is very dirty, and emptying the skimmer basket does not restore suction.
If suction is too strong, open the other skimmer flap 1/8 of the way.

Backwashing
Mark your calendar! Backwash every three weeks regardless of pressure. However, if your pressure gauge indicates a high reading, backwash immediately. The longer you wait, the harder the dirty DE powder becomes, the more difficult it is to get out of the grids and tank.
Unroll your blue backwash hose to the area you want the dirty DE powder to go. You will lose about fifty gallons of water to backwash.
Turn off your pump.
Turn your Multiport valve to the Backwash position. Turn on the pump. Watch the blue backwash hose to ensure that it does not kink, and explode! Watch the Sightglass on the Multiport valve, you will see dirty DE powder running out of the system, after the water has run clear, shut off the pump.
Turn your Multiport valve to the Rinse position. Turn on the pump. Rinse the tank for ten seconds. This will dislodge any DE that is stuck in the corners and crannies in your filter tank. Turn off the pump.
Repeat steps 4 and 5.
After the final Rinse, turn your Multiport to the Filter position. Its time to replace the DE that you have just backwashed out of your filter. This is added into the closest skimmer to the filter with the pump running. Add 6 one pound scoops of DE powder to a 36 square foot filter, or 7 scoops to a 48 square foot filter. (A scoop is available at our retail store, which is more accurate than the "one pound coffee can" method of measurement.
That completes the Backwashing procedure. Mark your calendar and be sure to backwash once every three weeks to ensure crystal clear water!
For Sand filters, the procedure is the same, with the exception of the addition of DE to your skimmers! your calendar! Backwash every three weeks regardless of pressure. Mod Media Filter Maintenance
Starites Mod-Media filter is the finest filter available today. It is virtually maintenance free, but a little planned maintenance while ensure that your filter cartridges will last for years.
At the end of your first season, rinse off the cartridges by following the steps listed below.
Thereafter, I like to open my filter mid-season and I perform an "acid wash" at the end of the year. Call our store for info on performing an acid wash on your cartridges, or rinse them off and bring them in to us.
Turn off your pump.
Roll out the drain hose from the bottom of your tank and open the valve.
Open the air relief valve on top of the filter, and wait a few minutes for the tank to drain completely.
While the tank is draining you can loosen the hand knobs around the perimeter of the filter tank, and slide up and off.
Once the tank has emptied you can lift (by hand, no heavy strength is needed) the top off your filter.
Remove the inner cartridge and hose it down with a garden hose and nozzle. DO NOT USE A PRESSURE WASHER! Start at the top and work your way down inside and out. After removing and cleaning the larger outside cartridge, rinse out the tank. It is imperative that both cartridges be dry before they are replaced in the housing.
Reverse the procedure, reassemble the tank (tightening the clamps like you would torgue the lugnuts on a car tire), start the pump, and keep the air relief valve open until water comes out the valve.

Pool Summarizing Procedure
Pump pool cover (if applicable) then remove leaves and debris.
Place garden hose under the cover and fill pool until the water level reaches the middle of the skimmer.
Remove cover and water bags. Lay the cover out and hose it off thoroughly. Allow it to dry completely and then "fan fold" the cover and store it for the summer in a safe, dry location.
Remove "gizzmos" from skimmers and winterizing plugs from pool returns. Store these in a logical place, they are easily misplaced.
Replace skimmer baskets, pump basket (check for cracks and holes which can cause pump damage and line blockages), return "eyeballs" and drain plugs, (put a few turns of Teflon tape on any drain plugs that dont use an o-ring).
Reinstall diving board, ladder, handrails (lubricate all bolts, theyll come off more easily at the end of the season).
Reconnect pump, filter and chlorinator.
Fill pump housing with water; lubricate housing gasket, close cover.
Start pump.
Bring a sample of pool water into our store for computerized water analysis. Starting the season off right with proper water balance.
<Back To Top>
Pool Winterization
Thoroughly vacuum the pool. Clean the liner and skimmers above the water line.
Check and adjust the Total Alkalinity, pH and metal levels.
Backwash the filter until the water level reaches the bottom of the skimmers. If you have a main drain, lower the water level an additional 3 inches below the bottom of the skimmer by selecting full main drain on your dial-a-flow valve at the front of your pump. If you do not have a main drain, put your cover pump in the pool and lower the water level until it is 3 inches below the skimmers.
Remove and store the skimmer baskets and return eyeballs in a safe place.
Blow out all lines with a shop-vac, or compressor.
Pour Non-Toxic Antifreeze into the lines.
Place Gizmos in the skimmers.
Disconnect Chlorinator, dispose of tabs, and soak chlorinator in warm soapy water. Dry and Store.
DE filter ownersDE filter owners: remove belly band and remove grid assembly, clean thoroughly and reassemble.
Sand filter ownersSand filter owners: remove drain plug from the bottom of the filter.
Cartridge filter ownersCartridge filter owners: unlock the locking units around the perimeter of the filter housing and remove the filter cartridges. Clean thoroughly and reassemble.
Disconnect pump and store; remove union o-rings and place inside pump basket for safekeeping.
Remove ladder and handrails. Store separate from chemicals. Remove diving board and rope & floats.
Add winterizing chemicals as per the manufacturer's instructions.
Place water bags around the perimeter of the pool and fill 2/3 with water.
Pad any sharp edges on your pool coping, ladder cups, waterfall etc
then place your pool cover on the pool and unfold. Place water bags along the edges and through the loops. Keep your "Little Giant Cover Pump" handy for heavy rainfalls and melting snow and ice.
Open your pool early so you can be sure that your pool is ready when you are ready to swim.
There are no guarantees on waterbags.
Pool covers are covered by manufacturer's warranty only.

Baquacil Plus Weekly Maintenance
Using your Baquacil Test Strips dip a fresh strip into the pool water and quickly remove. Do not shake the excess water off of the pads.
Compare the color of the Alkalinity pad to the bottles key colors and find the closest match. I like to keep my customers at 100-120 PPM for best results and minimal effect from addition of fresh water due to rain and evaporation. If your pool was low in Total Alkalinity you would be adding Alkalinity Plus to raise that range. You can feel free to call our office with your pool size and current alkalinity reading and we will calculate the amount needed to raise it sufficiently.
If the Alkalinity is OK, go ahead and check the pH reading on the test strip. Baquacil Plus pools tend to run higher pH readings than usual, so dont be surprised if you hover towards the high end of the scale all season long, You want your pH to be in the 7.2 7.8 range. If you are out of range call us for appropriate dosage of pH Minus (to lower a high pH) or pH Plus (if your pH is too low).
Next step
Baquacil level! Compare your pad to the one marked Baquacil on the Test Strips package. In our experience your pool will run no better with a Baquacil reading of 50 PPM, than it will at 35 PPM. Ask us for a Baquacil calculator and well show you how to make the conversion to top off your Baquacil level to 35 PPM. Incidentally, if you have a lot of effervescing or fizzing when you jump in your pool, chances are your Baquacil level is closer to 50 PPM than 35 PPM. Save your money here, no reason to over treat your pool. (We do bring the level up to 50 ppm at opening, and at closing).
Next step is to add the Baquacil Plus, add one packet (contains two tablets) per 10k gallons of pool water to your skimmer. These tablets will dissolve rather quickly. Do not place these tablets in your chlorinator!
Next, using your Baquashock or new Baquacil Quick Strips, test your Baquashock level. If your reading is in the OK range, your done
if it is not, you will need to add TWO gallons of Baquashock for every ten thousand gallons of water that your pool contains. You will want to wear rubber gloves when adding this product to your pool, dont wear your favorite clothes either, this product is 27% Hydrogen Peroxide, and will cause fabric to disintegrate and skin to burn pure white without any initial pain. I usually carry a little Sodium Bicarbonate (which neutralizes the burn if it gets on your skin). Dont waste your money and put in a gallon here or there
its all or nothing. Baquacil Plus pools may only need this dosage once a month or so, depending on usage and other factors. But risk the temptation to add less then the dosage amount for your pool. Call us and well drop off more product for you with no delivery charge.
Several times during the season let us check your Calcium Hardness level for you. This is a range you are not able to test, and should be adjusted to reduce corrosion. Please feel to call us or stop in with a water sample any time, our expertise is at your disposal.

How to Clear a Green Pool
Pools dont just get green; to keep a pool from becoming green see the handout entitled "1..2..3.. clear" But once youve got a green pool following these steps will clear it, and "1..2..3.. clear" will keep it that way!
1. Have your pool water tested here. We need to ensure that your chemical levels are all in range; some adjustments might be needed prior to attacking the algae. This is also important to maximize the effectiveness of the chemical treatment we will use to kill your algae. We want to start this "recipe" with a chlorine level of about 2 p.p.m.
2. Add 1/2 of the contents of the "Sun Yellow Clear" to the pool. This product does not fill the container, so mark the outside of the bottle when full, and only add half!
3. Add one quart of "Sun 60% Algaecide Concentrate" to the pool.
4. Add one bottle of "Sun-Brite" non-chlorine shock to the pool.
5. Run the pool through the night. If you have a D.E. filter, or if your pressure gauge is reading high, you should backwash now.
6. Vacuum the pool. This must be done the morning after the steps listed above. If you cant vacuum the pool dont bother adding the chemicals until you have the next morning free to perform a complete and thorough manual (no Polaris, but a old fashioned regular "hooked up to your skimmer vacuum" and backwash to follow.
7. If algae is left in the pool after this vacuum, hit the pool with the remaining half bottle of "Sun Yellow Clear" and re-vacuum the pool the next morning. Make sure you are maintaining a chlorine level of approx 2.0 p.p.m, if you fall below this point use "Sun Booster" granular shock. Do not over-shock the pool while using this recipe for clearing a green pool.

BaquaSpa Fresh Fill Chemical Instructions
1- After filling the spa with COLD water, (hot water from your household pipes often has a higher metal content), start by adjusting your Hardness. Add several ounces of CALCIUM HARDNESS UP to your spa water. We recommend a hardness reading in the range of 200-250 PPM.
2- ALKALINITY/pH PLUS is the next chemical that must be added when the spa has been freshly filled. This chemical acts to stabilize your water's pH. When adjusted your spaâs pH will not move unless you add pH adjusting chemicals, We recommend a TOTAL ALKALINITY range of 100-150 PPM. Use your test kit/strips to check before adding any ALKALINITY/pH PLUS. If you find that your Total Alkalinity is below 100 add ALKALINITY/pH PLUS one tablespoon at a time, wait 5 minutes with your spa jets running, and retest before adding any more chemicals or proceeding to the next step. Remember that it will also raise the pH at the same time.
3- pH is the next chemical range to address. Using your test kit/strips test the water's pH. If your reading is below the ideal range printed on your kit/strip you will be adding pH PLUS, if reading is above the ideal range, pH MINUS. If you add these adjusting chemicals by the teaspoon directly into the swirling water of your spa, retest 5 minutes later and adjust additionally if required. Add the appropriate dosage of BaquaSpa Waterline control as listed on the chart on the last page of these instructions.
4- Add BaquaSpa Waterline Control as per the dosage listed on chart below.
5- Add BaquaSpa Stain and Scale Control as per the dosage listed on chart below.
6- Add BaquaSpa Shock as per the dosage listed on chart A, and circulate for 20 minutes before proceeding to the next step.
7- Add BaquaSpa Sanitizer as per the dosage listed on chart below, and circulate for 20 minutes before proceeding to the next step.
8- Use BaquaSpa Test Strips to test sanitizer and recheck alkalinity and pH levels.

BaquaSpa Weekly Chemical Instructions
Consistency is the key when it comes to chemical maintenance of your tub. Try to add your weekly dosages on the same day each week. Another good tip is to have one person care for the tub and add all of the chemicals; this will eliminate duplication and over treatment of your water.
1-Just as we did on the fresh fill instructions, you should test the Total Alkalinity on a weekly basis. If your Total Alkalinity is below 90 PPM add one or two tablespoons of SUN ph/ALKALINITY PLUS directly to the spa's water, run the jets or cleanup cycle to dissolve completely. I find it more effective to add chemicals directly to the spaâs water, rather than into the filter compartment. After adding this to your spa and running it for 5 minutes you can retest to ensure that your Total Alkalinity is within range, and then proceed to adjust the pH if needed. Using the pH/ALKALINITY PLUS/MINUS that came with your start-up Kit; remember that it raises pH as well. Just as we did on the fresh fill, test your spaâs pH at least weekly If your pH is below the ideal range, add pH plus which is available separately. If itâs above the ideal range, add pH/ALKALINITY minus.
2-Add BaquaSpa Waterline Control.
3-Add BaquaSpa Stain & Scale Control.
4-Add BaquaSpa Shock according to usage rate, Circulate water on high-speed jets for 20 minutes with the cover off.
5-Add BaquaSpa Sanitizer as needed based on your test strip results.

Other benefits with Proteam¨ Supreme include "softer silky" water, better water clarity, more stability in chemical levels and no algae...thats right NONE.
