There is nothing quite like looking out at a perfectly clear pool on a hot summer day. And there is nothing quite as frustrating as dealing with cloudy, green, or unbalanced water when all you want to do is swim.

The good news is that keeping your pool crystal clear all summer is not complicated. It just requires consistency. Here is what you need to know.

Understand the Three Pillars of Pool Water Quality

Keeping your pool clean comes down to three things working together: circulation, filtration, and chemistry. When all three are dialed in, your pool almost takes care of itself. When one falls short, the others have to work harder and problems start to develop.

Circulation means your pump is running long enough each day to turn over the full volume of water in your pool. During peak summer, most pools should be running their pumps for at least 8 to 10 hours per day. Stagnant water is where algae and bacteria thrive.

Filtration means your filter is clean, functioning properly, and actually removing the particles and contaminants your sanitizer kills. A dirty or undersized filter lets those contaminants stay in the water even if your chemistry is otherwise perfect.

Chemistry means your water is properly balanced across several different parameters, not just chlorine. We will get into those in a moment.

Test Your Water Regularly

During peak summer use, water chemistry can shift faster than you expect. Heat, sunlight, heavy bather load, and rain all affect the balance of your water. The only way to stay ahead of problems is to test regularly.

At minimum, test your pool water two to three times per week during July and August. Home test strips give you a quick read, but for a more accurate picture bring a water sample into our store at 929 Route 25A in Miller Place. Keep Your Chlorine Levels Consistent

Chlorine is your primary defense against bacteria and algae. In the summer, chlorine burns off faster due to UV exposure and heat, so you need to add it more frequently than you might in cooler months.

Keep your free chlorine level between 1 and 3 parts per million. A stabilizer, or cyanuric acid, helps protect your chlorine from UV degradation and extends how long it stays effective in the water. Make sure your stabilizer level is in the right range, typically between 30 and 50 parts per million, especially during peak summer.

Balance Your Water Chemistry Beyond Just Chlorine

Chlorine gets all the attention but there are several other parameters that need to be in range for your pool to look and feel its best.

pH is probably the most important. If your pH drifts too high or too low, your chlorine becomes significantly less effective, your equipment can get damaged, and swimmers experience skin and eye irritation. Keep pH between 7.4 and 7.6.

Total alkalinity acts as a buffer for pH and keeps it from swinging wildly. Aim for a total alkalinity reading between 80 and 120 parts per million.

Calcium hardness affects the water's relationship with your pool surface and equipment. Too low and the water becomes aggressive and starts pulling calcium from your plaster or liner. Too high and you get scaling. The target range is typically 200 to 400 parts per million.

Shock Weekly

Even with proper daily sanitation, organic contaminants build up in your pool over time. Sunscreen, body oils, sweat, and environmental debris all accumulate and can create chloramines, the compound responsible for that strong chemical smell and eye irritation that people often mistakenly associate with too much chlorine.

Shocking your pool once a week, preferably in the evening to avoid rapid chlorine burnoff, breaks down these contaminants and gives your water a fresh reset. After a heavy pool party or a significant rainstorm, shock again.

Stay on Top of Your Filter

Your filter is doing the physical work of removing particles from your water. A filter that is clogged or overdue for cleaning cannot do its job properly, no matter how good your chemistry is.

Backwash your sand or DE filter when the pressure gauge reads 8 to 10 PSI above its clean starting pressure. If you have a cartridge filter, rinse the cartridge regularly and do a deep acid wash at least once per season.
