Pool Liner Replacement: How to Know When It Is Time and What to Expect

If you have had your inground pool for several years, chances are you have started to notice some changes. Maybe the color has faded, or you are losing water faster than you should be. Maybe there are wrinkles forming along the bottom or small tears near the steps. These are all signs that your vinyl liner may be reaching the end of its life -- and knowing when to replace it can save you from much bigger headaches down the road.
At Arthur Edwards Pool and Spa Centre, we have replaced thousands of liners across Long Island over the past 50 years. Here is everything you need to know.
How Long Does a Vinyl Liner Last?
A well-maintained vinyl liner pool can last anywhere from 10 to 20 years depending on a few key factors: how well the water chemistry has been maintained, how much sun exposure the pool gets, and how carefully the pool has been opened and closed each season. Liners that have been subjected to consistently unbalanced water, harsh chemicals, or rough handling during winterizing tend to show wear sooner.
Most Long Island pool owners find themselves looking at liner replacement somewhere between the 10 and 15 year mark, though some liners go longer with excellent care.
Signs It Is Time to Replace Your Liner
You do not always need to wait for a catastrophic tear to consider replacement. Here are the most common signs that your liner is ready to go:
Fading and discoloration. Vinyl liners naturally lose their color over time due to UV exposure and chemical contact. Some fading is normal, but when the pattern becomes unrecognizable or the liner turns a chalky white, it is a sign the material is breaking down.
Wrinkles and stretching. Wrinkles that appear suddenly and will not smooth out are often a sign of water getting behind the liner, a water table issue, or a liner that has simply stretched beyond its ability to hold its shape.
Visible tears or holes. Even small tears should be taken seriously. A patch can buy you some time, but if you are patching regularly, the liner has likely reached the point where full replacement makes more sense than continued repair.
Water loss. Losing more than a quarter inch of water per day through evaporation alone is a red flag. If you are consistently topping off your pool, a liner leak may be to blame.
Brittleness and cracking. As vinyl ages it loses its flexibility and can become brittle, especially around the waterline and step areas where it is most exposed to the elements.
What the Replacement Process Looks Like
Many homeowners are nervous about liner replacement because they assume it means weeks of construction and a pool that is out of commission for most of the summer. In reality the process is much more straightforward than you might think.
Here is what to expect when you work with Arthur Edwards:
First, we drain the pool completely and remove the old liner. Our team inspects the pool walls and floor for any damage that should be addressed before the new liner goes in. If there are any issues with the pool structure, this is the right time to handle them.
Next, we measure and order your new liner. We offer a wide range of patterns and colors so you can give your pool a completely fresh look at the same time. Many of our customers are surprised by how much a new liner transforms the appearance of their entire backyard.
Once the new liner arrives, installation typically takes one to two days. We fill the pool, balance the water chemistry, and you are back to swimming.
The whole process from start to finish usually takes less than a week depending on scheduling and liner availability.
Why It Matters Who Does the Work
A liner replacement is only as good as the installation. A liner that is not properly fitted, seated, or secured can develop wrinkles, pull away from the wall, or fail prematurely. At Arthur Edwards, every liner replacement is handled by our experienced team with the same attention to detail we bring to every new pool we build.
We have been fitting liners on Long Island for over 50 years. We know the unique challenges that come with our climate, our water table, and the wide variety of pool shapes and sizes we see across the island. That experience means a cleaner installation and a liner that performs the way it should for years to come.
